Roger Ebert's "At The Movies" Cancelled

After more than 20 years on the air, the movie review TV show "At the Movies" has been cancelled. The weekly, half-hour series made popular by critics Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel will air its last show on August 14.

Distributor Disney-ABC Domestic TV said in a statement: "This was a very difficult decision, especially considering the program's rich history and iconic status within the entertainment industry, but from a business perspective it became clear this weekly, half-hour, broadcast syndication series was no longer sustainable. We extend very special thanks to the two brilliant, visionary and incomparable critics that started it all, Roger Ebert and the late Gene Siskel."

Siskel passed away in February 1999. Ebert has cancer - it's been almost four years since he lost his lower jaw and, with it, his ability to speak. And "At the Movies" never seemed able to replicate the pair's chemistry on set, despite the talent of current hosts Michael Phillips and A. O. Scott. Of the 235 or so comments, I couldn't believe most were like the first three!

Yawn...Good grief look at the dude!
Me: What would Bob look like if he had a jaw removed?!

This show should have been cancelled 20 years ago. Ebert should have backed away from the dinner table years ago, and Skilless need to bulk up a bit. Either way 2 thumbs down.
Me: Cancelled 20 years ago? Here's a fellow who really knows what he's talking about!

This show should have been canceled. Siskel's Dead and Ebert's not far behind him!!!!!!
Me: I just cannot believe that people can be discarded like garbage!

Jeanne March 25th, 2010 12:46 pm ET

Well, the first two response are certainly compassionate.

Siskel and Ebert are icons and in order to preserve the original intent of the show, I agree that it should be canceled.

Me: Kudos to Jeanne for having respect and compassion.

Hers was the minority of such scathing responses! I don't want to lose faith in the human race, but these comments are enough to!

Oh Petra! This show will definitely be missed. He is still the same Roger and I lurve his spirit! I did read though that he and his wife will be starting up their own show later in the fall so let's keep an eye out for that. There weren't a lot of details as to whether they will produce or... but it's in the works.

Many of the next generation are ignorant and rude but I'm not worried because there is a higher judge who will take care of it in His timing.

I can understand the distributor's pov but cannot understand the ignorance of some people. K.

Nice comments....no, not the one's here by your readers, the ones you quoted in your post. I hope karma doesn't come back to bite them all in the a$$. I guess if it does though, we won't know as they don't have TV shows and aren't houshold names... ;)

Poor guy! Having lost a small part of my tongue to cancer, that's definitely a big 'ouch!' for me, and I cannot believe the stupid, unfeeling responses of some people. Seems that the anonymity of the web does pretty nasty things to some folk.

It's always a shame when an iconic show gets shelved. I guessed in the end the ratings are responsible, but you know, having watch several of my favourite American shows get canned halfway through a series (some of which went on to become cult shows), I wonder how much is down to idiotic planning? So many of them get moved to a late night slot to make room for something else, then they wonder why the viewing figures go down!

Hi Tipper! Unfortunately, as they say, the only constant in life is change. And the idiots! ;)

Hi PV! Am sure that Karma will definitely hit them in the arse! ;)

Hi Sarah! For some, isn't it awful?

Hi Jay! Omg, I didn't know that part of your tongue was removed due to cancer! I am so sorry to hear that. :((

So you can identify with these idiots! o.O
